IPL Q & A
What is IPL?
Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a form of light therapy. Like laser treatments, IPL uses the power of light to create changes in the deeper layers of your skin. While lasers use just one wavelength of light, IPL relies on scattered bursts of light that penetrate into the deeper layers of your skin without harming the outer layer.
Some of the issues IPL treatments can improve include:
- Birthmarks
- Sun damage
- Age spots
- Varicose or spider veins
- Rosacea
- Freckles
- Unwanted hair
The pigment in your skin and hair absorbs the light energy created during IPL treatments and converts it into heat. That heat breaks unwanted pigment into smaller fragments that your body can process and eliminate. When used for laser hair removal, the heat damages hair follicles to prevent or reduce regrowth.
During your sessions, you may feel a slight stinging or burning sensation. Some men and women compare the sensation to the snap of a rubber band against their skin. If you have especially sensitive skin, ask your practitioner about topical medications that can help numb the treatment area.
What can I do to prepare for IPL treatments?
In the weeks prior to your IPL treatments, you should avoid products and activities that can increase skin sensitivity. These include:
- Chemical peels
- Direct sun exposure
- Waxing
- Tanning beds
- Collagen injections
- Creams or products containing glycolic acid or vitamin A
- Medications that increase the risk of bleeding, including aspirin and ibuprofen
If you have additional questions about how to prepare, be sure to discuss your concerns with your practitioner during your consultation.
How many treatments do I need to see results?
You likely see results in the weeks following your initial treatment, but it can take multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. Your outcome depends on your treatment goals, the area being treated, and how your body responds to IPL therapy.
Your practitioner estimates the number of treatments you need during your consultation. You also learn more about the timing of treatments and what type of results to expect. It’s common to have a series of 3-6 treatments spaced a month apart for skin issues and 6-12 treatments for hair removal.
